“Seeing and Believing” is the largest exhibition devoted to the career of Leandro Erlich (b. 1973, Argentina) to date. From massive installations to videos, Erlich’s works employ optical illusions and sound effects to unsettle notions of common sense. Though what at first glance may seem familiar, on closer inspection the works prove to be surprising deviations from the usual. For example, boats float in the absence of water or people hang onto building walls in gravity-defying poses. The works beget doubt, raising questions on the actuality of reality—and reveal just how much unconscious habits influence perception. This exhibition showcases around 40 works from 1995 to 2017—more than 30 works being shown in Japan for the first time—including the Japanese premiere of Changing Rooms (2008) and the newly-commissioned work The Classroom (2017).
