(1958- )
Dirk Braeckman (b.1958) studies at the Koninklijke Academie voor Schone Kunsten and lives and works in Ghent, Belgium. He has represented the cultural award of the University of Louvain (2002) and have had solo exhibitions at various prestigious museums and galleries such as Le Bal, Zeno X, Stedelijk Museum voor Actuele Kunst (SMAK), Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium, National Art Museum Of China (NAMOC) among others.
Dirk Braeckman began his career as a (self) portrait photographer, but later consciously turned away from portrait photography. He finds the subjects for his photographic works in his immediate environment and he has a preference for places or spaces, particularly interiors. He investigates effects such as over-and under-exposure and printing methods. For a long time he only produced analogue photographs which he printed himself in his darkroom, but in recent years he has also explored digital photography. This new technique has introduced other approaches into his work, enabling him to experiment with different printing methods and to search the borders of monumental photography.
