이슬기는 1972년 서울 출생으로 1992년부터 파리에서 거주하며 활동 중이다. 「터전을 불태우라」(광주 비엔날레, 2014), 「강렬한 근접Intense Proximity」(팔레 드 도쿄, 파리, 2012), 「이벤토Evento」(보르도 비엔날레, 2009), 「애뉴얼리포트」(광주 비엔날레, 2007), 「유연성의 금기Elastic Taboo」(비엔나 쿤스트할레, 2007) 등 주요한 국제 전시에 참여하였으며 최근 미메시스미술관에서 개인전을 가졌다. 빅토리아 내셔널 갤러리(멜버른)에 작품이 소장되어 있고, 2001년 대안공간 파리프로젝트룸Paris Project Room을 시몽 부드뱅Simon Boudvin과 협업 설립하고 운영한 바 있다. 그 동안 일상의 사물들과 내밀한 소통을 유희하며 그 사물들이 지닌 개별적인 본질로 향해 있던 작가의 시선은 이불이라는 친근한 일상의 사물에 속담의 구전문화와 누빔의 전통 공예를 접목시켜 작가가 기원한 공동체의 집단적인 본질로 전회해 있다. 이미지로부터 발원하는 언어의 근원적 본질을 환기 시키는 속담의 이미지들은 그 소통의 방식이 인간집단과 사물의 소통을 가능하게 했던 인간의 원초적 경험이자 우리 모두의 무의식 속에 각인되어 있는 언어의 근원적 잠재성임을 일깨운다.

Seulgi Lee (*1972) lives and works in Paris. 

"She has developed a unique artistic practice immediately recognizable for its use of color, gesture, simple yet elegant forms, and performance. In spite of (or perhaps linked to) its deference to bright, cheerful color, Lee has described her sculptural practice as utilitarian, invariably related to the power, fragility, and contingency of the body: her works are tools, to be available at-hand, used by those who are nearby. Culled from everyday belongings, masks, and pedestrian objects, these artworks frequently employ a vocabulary more readily used to describe craft, and challenge arbitrary distinctions between mannered, formal sculptural syntax and a more popularized design or craft aesthetic. ..."
