문체부 '연임 불가' 통보...3년 임기 12월 13일 만료
하반기 마르셀 뒤샹 등 해외 유명 작가 전시 이어져

바르토메우 마리 국립현대미술관장이 연임이 불가된 가운데 "정상적인 업무진행뿐 아니라 가능하다면 보다 훌륭한 수준의 활동을 보여드릴 수 있도록 끝까지 노력하겠다"고 12일 밝혔다.

마리 관장과 국립현대미술관은 이날 오후 언론사에 국립현대미술관장 임기 종료 결정에 따른 편지를 배포했다.

마리 관장은 "미술관장의 3년 임기는 짧다. 제가 한국에서 뗀 첫 발걸음이 두 번째 발걸음으로 이어질 수 있었으면 한다"며 "연임하고 싶다"는 의사를 피력했지만, 문체부는 11일 '연임 불가' 통보를 했다.

국립현대미술관 하반기는 해외 유명 작가들의 전시가 잇따른다. 하룬 파로키(11월), 마르셀 뒤샹(12월 서울관), 제니 홀저(서울관) 등의 대형 전시가 열릴 예정이다. 마리 관장 임기는 12월 13일까지다.

◇다음은 마리 관장 편지 전문

저는 지난 9월 11일 화요일, 문화체육관광부로부터 국립현대미술관에서의 제 임기가 종료된 이후 후임 관장을 찾기 위한 공고가 곧 게재될 예정임을 통보 받았습니다. 이는 즉, 제가 2018년 말 이후로는 더 이상 국립현대미술관의 관장으로서 일할 수 없게 됨을 의미합니다.

제가 미술관을 위해 일하는 기간 동안 경험했던, 그리고 지금도 경험하고 있는 모든 것이 영광스럽고도 특별한 일이라고 생각합니다. 한국, 그리고 국립현대미술관을 위해 일할 수 있었던 시간 모두가 저에겐 소중한 경험입니다. 전 세계에서 가장 큰 규모를 가진 주요 미술관 중 하나이자 아시아에서 선구적인 역할을 하는 국립현대미술관의 수장으로 훌륭한 직원들과 함께 일할 수 있어 영광이었습니다. 저에겐 한국 근·현대 미술에 대해 배울 수 있는 값진 기회이기도 했으며 이를 통해 향후에도 한국미술의 국제적 인지도 상승에 제가 작게나마 기여할 수 있기를 희망합니다.

12월까지로 예정된 이 자리에서 올해 마지막 개막 전시 준비 및 2019년 프로그램 확정 등 미술관이 여느 때와 마찬가지로 정상적인 업무 진행뿐 아니라 가능하다면 보다 훌륭한 수준의 활동을 보여드릴 수 있도록 끝까지 노력하겠습니다. 연속성과 안정성이야 말로 미술관의 성공조건이라는 것이 저의 변함없는 신념이며, 국립현대미술관에서도 향후에 이런 조건이 갖춰질 수 있길 기대합니다.

미술관에 관심과 애정 보여주신 모든 분들께 감사의 마음을 전하며, 이 훌륭한 미술관이 더욱 발전할 수 있도록 앞으로도 많은 도움 부탁 드립니다. 지난 10년간 미술관이 겪었던 부산한 역사에도 불구하고 국립현대미술관은 한국사회와 국제무대 속에서 중심적 문화기관이 될 자격이 있는 미술관입니다.

국립현대미술관 차기 관장에게도 행운을 빌며, 여러모로 제한적이고 짧은 기간 동안이었지만 미술관을 위한 저의 노력이 긍정적인 기여로 평가되기를 희망합니다.

On Tuesday 11 September, I was informed of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism’s decision to issue an open call for the MMCA Director position. A new Director will be appointed at end of my current term. This means that I will no longer hold the post of MMCA Director after the end of the 2018 recruitment exercise.

I have experienced and continue to experience this chapter of my professional life as a real honour and privilege. It is an honour to serve the MMCA, a highly relevant institution in the great country that is Korea. It is a privilege to lead such a major museum, one that has become amongst the largest globally in size, a leading pioneer of its kind in Asia, and which is staffed by teams of excellent people. I have acquired an unforgettable wealth of knowledge of the modern and contemporary art of Korea through serving the MMCA. I will continue to be its champion with the wish that its reputation will further grow across the world.

During my remaining time in the position until December 2018 I am committed to the completion of the museum’s 2018 exhibition programme and will give priority to the planning of the 2019 programme. The MMCA will continue its work as normal and I will do everything possible to ensure that its activities are delivered to the highest of standards. It is my conviction that continuity and stability are central to the success of any museum and my wish is that these conditions will be found as the museum enters its next stage. Above all I would like to express my gratitude to all those who have supported the MMCA and ask that this community remain committed to making this great institution even greater. The MMCA has experienced a decade of many changes and challenges and has emerged stronger as a result. It is my belief that it is vital that the MMCA occupies a central role in the life of Korean society and it is highly deserving of a prime position in the global cultural arena.

I wish the very best to the Directors of the MMCA that follow me. I hope that my contribution, although short and limited in many ways, will be considered as a positive chapter in the story of a great museum.
