개인전으로는 White Atmosphere(김리아갤러리, 2015), 6(자하미술관 2013), Yes, You Did it, (갤러리2, 2011), 캔버스 인형놀이(OCI미술관, 2010), 내가 했던 것들(갤러리2, 2009), How Ugly They are!(대안공간 루프, 2007), 김혜나(인사미술공간, 2006)가 있으며 그룹전으로는
Gallery EM is pleased to present Moon and Crab, a solo exhibition of new works by Hyena Kim (b. 1981, Seoul), from December 22, 2016 to February 4, 2017. This is Kim’s first show with Gallery EM, but the artist’s seventh solo exhibition. She will display 10 new abstract paintings whose main themes are objects that easily decay and atmospheres of light and color drawn from nature.
In her work, Kim offers a planar view of aspects of psychological flow that she has experienced for several years at certain times and in certain spaces, such as moods, memories and emotions. Kim paints visual scenery yet emphasizes the imaginative, excluding descriptive and representative elements. She examines the representative potential of painting by overlaying abstract forms and colors that express the filters through which she perceives the uncertainties of phenomena in her daily life.
As implied by the exhibition’s title, Moon and Crab, the works that Kim will introduce in this exhibition not only address ephemeral elements of nature but dig into the temporal experience of objects, as expressed in stale bread and rotten eggs and fish. Kim studies the aesthetic moment in which complex elements are composed of different dimensions. As such, the ever-changing objects in her paintings, with the addition of various narrative layers, appear as internalized images of hidden beauty within the process of change.
Hyena Kim lives and works in Seoul, Korea. She received a BA in painting from Sungshin Women’s University and an MFA in painting from Hongik University. She has held solo shows at Kimreeaa Gallery, Seoul (2015), Zaha Museum, Seoul (2013), Gallery 2, Seoul (2009, 2011), OCI Museum, Seoul (2010), Loop, Seoul (2007) and Insa Art Space, Seoul (2006). She has also participated in group exhibitions at Studio 148, Seoul (2016), One and J. Gallery, Seoul (2016), Salon de H, Seoul (2015), OCI Museum, Seoul (2015), O’New Wall, Seoul (2014), Common Center, Seoul (2014), Boan Inn, Seoul (2011), MK2 Art Space, Beijing (2011), Total Museum, Seoul (2010), Ando Fine Arts, Germany (2010), Il Min Museum, Seoul (2009), Marugame Genichiro Inokuma Museum, Japan (2009), Cais Gallery, Seoul (2007), SoMA Drawing Center, Seoul (2007), Insa Art Space, Seoul (2005) and Loop, Seoul (2005).
