[전시] 뉴 미디어 아트 2016: Helen Koo, Elisabeth Pellathy, Kang Su Jeong (2016년 2월 24일 – 3월 6일)

뉴미디어 아트란 새로운 매체 기술을 아트에 접목시킨 분야를 통칭하며, 예술의 개념, 시장, 교육 및 전반적 시스템에 변화를 일으킬 수 있는 많은 가능성을 내포하고 있다. 뉴미디어 아트의 ‘New (새로움)’이라는 단어의 자체의 상대성이 시사하듯이, 뉴미디어 아트는 각 시대에서 ‘새롭다’고 여겨지는 기술과 끊임없이 접목하며 발전해왔다. 뉴미디어 아티스트가 새로운 기술에 관심을 가지는 이유는 현대 아티스트에게 있어 그들의 삶을 둘러싼 모든 것들이 그들의 현실을 표현할 수 있는 작품의 재료 및 소재가 되기 때문이다. 또한 이러한 새로운 기술들은 작품을 단지 만들기 위한 수단으로서가 아닌, 기존의 작품과 예술에 대한 철학적인 개념에 도전하는 여러 가지 특징들을 가지고 있다. 또한 현대인들에게 중요한 커뮤니케이션 수단이 된 영상, 소셜 미디어, 인터넷과 같은 뉴미디어와 모바일 기기의 보급은 많은 작가들에게 새로운 방식으로 소통의 가능성을 열어주었다.

본 전시에서는 국제적으로 활발하게 활동 중인 14명의 뉴미디어 아티스트의 작품을 2주 간격으로 소개할 예정이다. Sarah Choo, Hans Gindlesberger, Joe Hedges, Sanja Hurem, Colby Jennings, Kang Su Jeong, Mark Kleine, Helen Koo, Liss LaFleur, Kim Miller, Sean Mullan, Elisabeth Pellathy, Joe Ren, Borja Rodríguez이 참여 예정으로 런던의 테이트 모던 (TATE Modern), 뉴욕 모던아트 뮤지엄 (MoMA), IEEE 국제 심포지엄, PBS 방송사, MASS MoCA 등을 포함한 세계 미술관 및 방송사에서 소개되었으며 미국에서 뉴미디어아트 전공 교수로 재직 중인 아티스트들이 다수 참여 하였다.

New media art utilizes new media technology to create art. As the term “new” in new media art indicates how such art changes relatively with “newness,” new media art has constantly incorporated technologies considered “new” at the moment. The reason that new media artists are interested in new media technology is that contemporary artists look for their materials and subject matters in their daily lives, and they use these to express their realities. New media technologies are not only tools for work, but they also contain crucial features that may subvert philosophical concepts of “Art” and artworks. In addition, new media, including video, social media, the Internet, and smartphones, have become essential tools for communication these days, and have opened up new possibilities for communication between artists and the audience.

Our 2nd international exhibition on New Media Art, CICA New Media Art 2016 features works of international artists including Sarah Choo, Hans Gindlesberger, Joe Hedges, Sanja Hurem, Colby Jennings, Kang Su Jeong, Mark Kleine, Helen Koo, Liss LaFleur, Kim Miller, Sean Mullan, Elisabeth Pellathy, Joe Ren, and Borja Rodríguez.

Elisabeth Pellathy

Elisabeth Pellathy는 드로잉, 프린트 작업, 전자미디어 및 디지털 작업을 하는 아티스트이다. 멸종위기의 생명체, 언어, 문화 및 정보는 그녀의 작업의 영감이 된다. 제1세대 미국인으로서, 그녀는 사라지는 것들을 보전하려는 노력과 종종 발생하는 시적인 불이행 과정을 주목해왔다. Pellathy는 Alfred University School of Art and Design에서 전자예술로 MFA 석사를 취득했다. 그녀는  Vermont Studio Center, Frans Masreel Centrum, Kasterlee Belgium과 뉴욕 알프레드의 the Institute for Electronic Arts에서 아트 레지던스를 하였다. 그녀의 작품은  스페인 바르셀로나의 Loop Video Festival, 뉴욕 Proteus Gowanus Gallery, 포트 콜린스의 Colorado State University Art Museum, 버지니아 페어팩스의 George Mason University Center for the Arts 등에서 작품을 발표하였다. 그녀는 현재 버밍엄의 University of Alabama에서 뉴미디어 전공 교수로 재직 중이다.

Elisabeth Pellathy is a multi-disciplinary artist, utilizing drawing, printmaking, electronic media and digital fabrication in her work.  Issues raised by the disappearance of species, language, culture and information are the catalyst for her visual explorations.  As a first-generation American, she is keenly aware of the effort to preserve the disappearing, and the poetic slippage that often results.  Pellathy holds an MFA in Electronic Integrated Arts from Alfred University School of Art and Design.  She has been a resident at the Vermont Studio Center, and Frans Masreel Centrum, Kasterlee Belgium and the Institute for Electronic Arts, Alfred, NY.  Her work has been shown at Loop Video Festival, Barcelona, Spain; Proteus Gowanus Gallery, NYC; Colorado State University Art Museum, Fort Collins, CO; and George Mason University Center for the Arts, Fairfax, VA. Pellathy is currently an assistant professor of New Media at the University of Alabama, Birmingham.  

Helen Koo, Jason Lin, & Jasmine Zhou

Helen Koo는 켈리포니아 대학의 패션 디자인과 테크놀로지 랩 (FT Lab)의 설립자이자 교수이다. 그녀는 의복 디자인과 제품 개발, 착용할 수 있는 테크놀로지, 기능성 의복, 지속가능한 디자인 등을 주제로 연구를 하고 있다. 그녀는 기금을 받아 스포츠를 위한 기능성 의복, 극한 환경을 위한 보호 의복, 특수 시장을 위한 의복, 의료를 위한 센서가 달린 스마트 의복 개발 프로젝트를 진행하고 있다. 그녀는  IEEE-International Symposium of Wearable Computers의 웨어러블 컴퓨팅 디자인 대회에서 최우수 전시상을 수상하였으며 국내외 디자인 대회에서 다수의 상을 수상하였다. 그녀는 국내외에서 활발하게 전시 활동을 하고있으며 최근에는 만성 질환과 장애를 가진 사람들을 위한 착용 가능한 기술을 개발하고 있다. 

Jason Lin은 디자인과 심리학을 복수전공하고 미술과 교육을 부전공하고 있는 대학생이다. 그는 아동 발달과 접근을 돕는 디자인에 관심이 있다. 현재는 물결모양 오르가미 패턴을 이용한 형태가 변하는 의복을 개발하고 있다.

Jasmine Zhou는 전자공학을 전공하고 있는 대학생이다. 그녀는 착용가능한 테크놀로지에 관심이 있으며 현재 형태가 변하는 의복에 전자 공학과 기술을 접목하는 연구를 하고 있다.

Prof. Helen Koo Helen Koo is an assistant professor of Design and a founder of Fashion Design and Technology lab (FT Lab) at the University of California, Davis. Her research and creative activity interests include apparel design and product development, wearable technology, functional garments, and sustainable designs. She has conducted multidisciplinary funded research projects on developing functional clothing for sports, protective garments for extreme environments, clothing for special markets, and smart clothing with sensors for healthcare. She won the award for the best exhibition in the wearable computing design competition of the IEEE-International Symposium of Wearable Computers for her development of health care smart clothing, and she won several other national and international design competitions. She has actively exhibited her designs nationally and internationally. Her recent works focus on developing wearable technology for people with chronic diseases and disabilities.

Jason Lin is an undergraduate student double majoring in Design and Psychology as well as double minoring in Art Studio and Education. He is passionate about child development and designing for accessibility. Currently, he is researching the use of origami corrugation patterns over soft materials to create transformable garments.

Jasmine Zhou is an undergraduate student studying Electrical Engineering. She is interested in wearable technology and currently working on incorporating technology and electronics into transformable garments.

Kang Su Jeong

Kang Su Jeong is a new media artist working on 3D animation. She creates surreal 3D environment and characters inspired by computer hardware and the human anatomy. She studied New Form at the Graduate School of Total Arts, Kookmin University. She has actively exhibited her works in Korea since 2013.  

강수정은 3D 애니메이션을 제작하는 뉴미디어 아티스트이다. 그녀는 컴퓨터 하드웨어와 인체 해부학에 영감을 받아 초현실적 3D 가상공간과 캐릭터를 만들었다. 그녀는 국민대 종합예술대학원에서 뉴폼 전공을 수료하였으며 2013년부터 국내에서 활발히 작품을 전시 해왔다.
