NYU's Grey Art Gallery Exhibition Highlights Early Works of Diebenkorn
Diebenkorn in New Mexico is the first museum examination of a seminal moment in the career of artist Richard Diebenkorn when, between 1950 and 1952, he was enrolled in the graduate fine arts department at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque. Supported by the G.I. Bill and distanced from the art worlds of both East and West coasts, Diebenkorn produced astonishingly mature and beautiful works that have, until now, remained relatively unknown. On view at the Grey Art Gallery at New York University from January 25 through April 5, 2008, the show includes some 40 paintings and drawings from museums and private collections, as well as from the Diebenkorn estate, many of which are being exhibited together for the first time. Instructor: Jesa Damora Flowers and gardens are surely the most delightful of drawing subjects. Each is unique, just like you. This drawing course is about freeing the unique from the commonplace, about drawing a rose, not the rose. Forgetting what you know and drawing what you see opens your eyes to the specifics or the "minute particulars" of life wherein lies its vitality and power. This course is also deeply engaged with the pathways or techniques to doing this more proficiently. Classes will include both black and white drawing on Mylar, and work in color, as well as drawing in both the studio and the Tower Hill gardens and grounds.
