The Fix on Colonial Philadelphia Furniture: A Secret Guide to Cabinetmakers’ Prices July 5, 2008 - April 2009: In 1772, a group of Philadelphia master cabinetmakers published Prices of Cabinet and Chair Work, a 36-page book listing furniture forms and their decorative variations, retail prices for furniture in mahogany and walnut, and the wages to be paid to the journeymen who made the furniture. This exhibition features furniture that is delineated in the book of prices, including three large case pieces with the three types of tops, or "heads", from least expensive to most expensive: flat, pitch pediment, and scroll pediment. Discover the Millville Lock with a National Park Service volunteer from the John H. Chafee Blackstone River Valley National Heritage Corridor. Hike along the old New York and New England rail trail to visit the best-preserved lock along the Blackstone Canal. Along the way, you will learn a little about the history of Millville and the role of the canal and railroad here. Then continue to the Triad Bridge overlooking the Blackstone River, where you will hear about the Southern New England Railroad, the rail line that sank with the Titanic. The completed segment begins on Rte. 126 in Woonsocket, RI and heads south through the towns of Cumberland, Lincoln, and Central Falls, RI. (approximately 13 miles). In Ashton, RI, the Bikeway follows the route of the Blackstone Canal for three miles, mostly on top of the historic towpath. While at Ashton, visit the Captain Wilbur Kelly House Museum, a newly opened museum and visitor center adjacent to the Bikeway that offers free tours. Interim on-road routes stretch north to Woonsocket, RI, home of the Museum of Work and Culture, and south to Providence, RI. While in Pawtucket, RI visit the Slater Mill, the Birthplace of the American Industrial Revolution and the Blackstone Valley Visitor Center. From here, one can follow city streets into Providence to make a connection with the popular East Bay Bikepath that travels 14.5 miles along Narragansett Bay to the historic waterfront community of Bristol, RI.
