In this intermediate class students and instructor will take an in-depth look at the vessel form in blown glass. Raku means joy or pleasure and also describes a process of firing pottery that originated in Japan. This class will explore the varied techniques of raku, a fast-fire process in which the ware is pulled red hot from the kiln and placed in a container with combustible materials such as sawdust, leaves, straw or newspaper. Colored slips and a variety of glazes will be used. Participants will partake in all aspects of the firing process. While the emphasis is on firing, forming techniques will also be addressed.
