Gain a new perspective, and learn about the history, lifestyle, and spirituality of the Navajo people, while studying the basics of a unique and beautiful tapestry technique. Using a small version of the Navajo loom, students will create a sampler featuring stripes, pick-and-pick, honeycomb patterns, and a traditional motif using the vertical join. Weavers with previous experience may select a pattern which includes the diagonal join. Discussions of Navajo history and mythology will accompany the weaving sessions. No weaving experience is required.

Painter Grace Hartigan passed away two weeks ago and the world became the tiniest bit less interesting. She was 86, so had lived "a full life" as they say, although... Philadelphia Treasures Eakins’s Gross Clinic and Saint-Gaudens’s Angel of Purity August 2, 2008 - June 2009: The Museum welcomes two masterpieces made for Philadelphia by two of nineteenth-century America’s finest artists, Thomas Eakins and Augustus Saint-Gaudens. Close contemporaries and friends, they both trained in Paris and traveled in Europe before returning to the United States about 1870 to begin distinguished careers. Sharing a belief in the expressive power of the human body as a subject for modern painting and sculpture, they developed different styles. |
