Stepping Outside the "Financial Box" We are all in a certain financial place – our "box" – and it is important that we not only are aware of where we are, but that we take actual steps to get out of it, if we want our financial lives to improve.
Šolman’s "The Heart of Perspective, The Making of the Film" Concludes April 5th at UCCS Dario Šolman’s The Heart of Perspective, The Making of the Film is an ongoing project begun in 2001 that consists of studies and tests for a film that will never be made. Šolman has stated, “When we use the word ‘film,’ we think of a possible film, a hypothetic interplay of image, sound and text. To avoid further confusion, we should think of it as film without a film. In other words, a film space that is not contained in a film shell.” Instead, Šolman uses the terms Cinemation or Secondary-Cinema to refer to his practice. He allows the evidences of the film - the tests, the texts, and the research - to define what this non-existent film is or can be. Death For No Reason Are sophistic arguments sufficient defence for artists who gain notoriety by ‘documenting’ animals’ deaths? Can the capture and starvation of an animal in exhibit be justified by its oblique commentary on society? What, if anything, is being said under the cover of art? As another show with dubious animal death content opens in San Francisco there’s a different question to ask, one that the artists should ask of themselves. Wall at WAM: Alexander Ross (Fri, Jul 4)
Worcester Art Museum, 55 Salisbury Street, Worcester, MA
Known for paintings that are uniquely hybrid in nature, Alexander Ross produced a project for the Museum's Wall at WAM series that adapts his imagery and technique for the second-story setting and grand scale of the Renaissance Court. The result is a new kind of hybrid based on clay elements, photography, drawing and inkjet, which creates a frieze-like expanse activating the entire sixty-seven foot wall. For all their obvious differences, Ross' mural shares with the ancient Worcester Hunt mosaic, located below, an action and aesthetic that are notable for disorienting shifts in scale, non-illusionistic space, and moments of improvisation within a system of representation. Although separated by 1500 years, the mosaic and Ross' mural powerfully emulate human emotions, then and now, about the external world. You have to see it to believe it!
Cost: Free with Museum admission.
