Introduction to Navajo Weaving (Mon, Oct 20)

Gain a new perspective, and learn about the history, lifestyle, and spirituality of the Navajo people, while studying the basics of a unique and beautiful tapestry technique. Using a small version of the Navajo loom, students will create a sampler featuring stripes, pick-and-pick, honeycomb patterns, and a traditional motif using the vertical join. Weavers with previous experience may select a pattern which includes the diagonal join. Discussions of Navajo history and mythology will accompany the weaving sessions. Explore the basic fundamentals of working with metal to make wearable fine crafted jewelry or small scale sculptures. Learn basic techniques such as sawing, filing, roller printing, cold connecting, soldering, finishing and simple stone setting. Focus will be on proper tool use, skill development and personal creativity through instructor guided projects. Projects may include pendants, bracelets, rings and/or earrings.
